Chapter 28

Henry’s house—two nights later

Cerissa glanced out the library window. Henry stood near the gazebo, leaning over a high-quality telescope. Anne-Louise had left a few nights ago, and since then, he’d been sweet and attentive.

Now he was outside behind his house, engrossed with something in the sky. Upon rising, he had fed, immediately unpacked his telescope, and asked Cerissa if she minded waiting while he observed a planet.

No community meetings were scheduled for tonight. No potential investors were in town. She’d been killing time, using the ornate desk in his library to work. Her tablet was open to the most recent lab report on the modified human clones. Her colleagues at the Enclave sent reports on a daily basis—tedious but necessary work.

One clone had a high fever. She wrote back recommending a change in antibiotics, suggesting they isolate it from the others. She didn’t want drug-resistant bacteria sweeping through the entire population. It should have been impossible. There should have been no way for one of those bacteria to infiltrate the Enclave. Still, she had to be cautious. They might lose the whole population if she wasn’t careful.

She checked the rest of her email, surprised to see one from Anne-Louise. Henry’s maker had obtained a prospectus from Leopold and wanted to make a sizeable investment.

Stunned, Cerissa sat back in her chair. With Anne-Louise’s money, they were almost half-way there. Leopold still adamantly refused to allow Henry to invest, and she hadn’t pushed the issue further.

How will Henry react? She twined a lock of hair around her finger. Anne-Louise in, him out. Is that why she did it? To yank Henry’s chain?

The buzz of her phone signaled the arrival of a message from Ari. She read his text and swallowed hard. She had anticipated this, but on top of Anne-Louise’s news, his message stared back at her like a storm warning during monsoon season.

She got up and peered through the library window. Henry was still preoccupied with his telescope. She pulled the drapes so he wouldn’t notice her absence. After texting Ari back, she took the hall past the kitchen, avoiding the drawing room so Henry wouldn’t see her through the glass-paneled French doors, and found Ari waiting on the front porch.

“We can talk in here,” she said, leading Ari through the foyer and into the large open kitchen. She took a Coke out of the refrigerator and placed the can on the kitchen table for him, a glass filled with ice next to it.

He popped the tab on the Coke can. “I got called into the Protectors’ Assembly and grilled,” he said after she took the seat across from him. “Questions like, why is she spending so much time around Henry? Why isn’t she wearing her lenses all the time? The gaps I’ve had to cut out are making them suspicious.”

She glanced over her shoulder to make sure they were alone. “What did you tell them?”

“Nothing yet,” he said, and took a swig from the can, ignoring the glass. “Kid, you have to get serious about this.
